WKRG NEWS 5 LIVE is a CBS-affiliated television station licensed to Mobile, Alabama. And also covering Pensacola, Florida, on virtual channel 5 (UHF digital channel 20). It is part of a duopoly alongside Gulf Shores. Alabama-licensed CW station WFNA, which is owned by Irving, Texas-based Nexstar Media Group (channel 55). The two stations share facilities on Broadcast Drive in southwest Mobile with numerous iHeartMedia radio stations. WKRG-transmitter TVs is in unincorporated Baldwin County near Spanish Fort, Alabama.

Each week, WKRG-News 5 broadcasts 22 hours of local newscasts (with four hours each weekday and one hour each on Saturdays and Sundays).

The station’s programming focus shifted to weather and news in 2002. And the station’s branding reflected this: it was rebranded from “WKRG 5” to WKRG News 5 (based on the station’s News Center branding in the 1980s and 1990s). And its slogan hailed it as Mobile’s “Weather Authority.” On October 18, 2010, starting with its 6:00 p.m. Newscast, WKRG  News 5 became the second television station in the Mobile-Pensacola market and the first Mobile-based station to begin bro

WKRG News 5 used to broadcast a weekday morning newscast that lasted until 8:00 a.m. Preempting the first hour of The Early Show, as well as a weekday 9:00 a.m. newscast. The 7:00 a.m. newscast will cancel in 2008 at CBS’ request that its affiliates air both hours of The Early Show. And the 9:00 a.m. newscast will cancel in 2009 due to low viewership and Media General’s staff reductions. On March 30, 2015, this newscast returned to the 9 a.m. slot as a half-hour newscast on weekdays.

WKRG NEWS 5 LIVE is one of only two stations in the market that still starts their morning newscast at 5 a.m. Along with WPMI, which carried a 4:30 a.m. show from September 2013 to June 2015. WKRG News 5  is one of the two surviving stations in the market that start their weekday morning newscast at 5 a.m. On June 20, 2015, WKRG News 5 became the first Mobile station (and the second in the market overall) to broadcast weekend morning newscasts from 5–6 a.m. Saturdays and 6–8 a.m. Sundays.

WKRG News 5 began broadcasting newscasts at 4:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on December 5, 2016. The Andy Griffith Show moved to sister station WFNA on weeknights at 9:30 p.m. Replacing The Andy Griffith Show, which moved to WFNA after their 9 p.m. news. Which does also produced by WKRG News 5.

In September 2011, WKRG News 5 replaced the Retro Television Network with Me TV on its third digital subchannel.

Conversion from analog to digital Edit WKRG News 5 stopped broadcasting regular programming on its analog signal. VHF channel 5, on June 12, 2009, the deadline for full-power television stations in the United States to switch from analog to digital transmissions. The station’s digital signal remained on UHF channel 27 before the transfer. Digital television viewers that support PSIP display the station’s virtual channel as its original VHF analog channel 5.
