Bring the Indoors Outwards

2 min read

Many think that the home and garden need to be two separate areas and have boundaries in-between. This isn’t always the case, and a new trend is linking your indoor and outdoor space. The size of your garden doesn’t make a difference to achieving the indoors outwards design trend and making your home feel larger.

There are different ways in achieving this, and if done right, you will be more likely to keep the doors open on warmer days providing your home with a draft and fresh air.

Adding Bi-Fold Doors

Bi-fold doors are a good way of opening up a space. If you have a raised patio or flat ground outside, a bi-fold door can create a seamless transition from indoors to the outdoors. Because the UK weather is so unpredictable, bi-fold doors can spend most of the year closed shut. A good way of combatting this is adding a canopy the other side of the door. This way you get to have your doors open without rainfall entering your home. This creates an area where you can sit outside and enjoy your space, no matter the weather.

Composite Decking

Composite decking is another way of bringing the indoors outwards. Antique toned boards can really open up your living space, particularly as the antique tones are very similar to indoor flooring. Your deck then becomes an extension of your indoor living space, drawing people’s eyes to the outdoors. Unlike traditional timber, NeoTimber composite decking is weatherproof and slip resistant, creating a much safer outdoor space.

Internal Courtyards

Creating an internal space within your home can really lend itself to that indoor outwards look. Extending an area already existing outside and creating a small courtyard is a simple way of growing the size of your home. Adding glazing to these internal courtyards is a great way to prevent dark corners in adjacent rooms.

Garden Lighting

Garden lightning is a simple yet very effective way of extending your living space. As the sun disappears and the night settles in, you can still see and enjoy your garden. There are a few ways of doing this, path lighting is a popular one, but also raised bed lighting, fence lighting and string lights across canopies and pergolas are great alternative additions.

Essentially, what you want to achieve is to blur the lines between your indoor space and outdoor space, and any of these installation ideas can help you do this.
