King 5 News

The NBC-affiliated television station KING-TV, virtual channel 5 (UHF digital channel 25), is licensed to Seattle, Washington, and also serves Tacoma. It is part of a duopoly with Everett-licensed independent station KONG, which is owned by McLean, Virginia-based Tegna Inc. (channel 16). The Home Plate Center in Seattle’s So Do district houses both stations’ studios, while KING 5 news is in the city’s Queen Anne neighborhood.

It was purchased and became the flagship station of Dorothy Bullitt’s King Broadcasting Company eight months after it debuted as the first television station in the Pacific Northwest; the company currently operates as a license holder for its holdings under Tegna ownership. Since becoming an NBC affiliate in 1959, the station has consistently led the Seattle television market.

NEWS Operation

Each week, KING-5 News broadcasts 46 hours of locally produced newscasts (with seven hours each weekday, six hours on Saturdays, and five hours on Sundays).

To compete with KOMO-TV, KING-5 News began broadcasting its newscasts in high definition in 1999; at the time, it only had one HD-capable studio camera.
