Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super vs RTX 2070: Which is the Best GPU?
4 min readWhich is the best graphics card rtx 2070 vs rtx 2070 super you can buy. I know how confusing the graphics card market can be. You have to worry about whether to get a GeForce, a Radeon, or an AMD Radeon, and you can’t even be sure what model number to look for. So why should you spend the extra $100 on the RTX 2070 Super over the RTX 2070?
The RTX 2070 Super is faster than the RTX 2070
To make things a bit more confusing, Nvidia also has a similar version of the RTX 2070, the RTX 2070 Founder’s Edition, and a Founders Edition for the GeForce RTX 2070. The Founder’s Edition is the only one you’ll actually want to buy because it has the highest clockspeeds. You have to pay more for the Founders Edition because it’s faster. The Founders Edition cards have a base clock of 1555MHz and a boost clock of 1635MHz. The Super version clocks it to 1650MHz, but it has 4GB of video RAM rather than the 2GB in the Founder’s Edition. While you won’t get the extra memory in the Founder’s Edition, the extra 4GB of video RAM isn’t likely to make any difference in your PC’s performance.
The RTX 2070 Super is cheaper than the RTX 2070
Let’s be clear: if you’re going to invest in a high-end graphics card, you’ll need to pony up for Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2070. That’s the GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition, and it’ll cost you $500 for the Founders Edition, or $600 if you buy it online. It’s also the model of the card you should expect to see in game shops, and it’s where most of the models that cost more than the RTX 2070 Founders Edition, and some that cost more than the RTX 2070 Max-Q, will be found. But if you don’t have a reasonable budget, and you want to push your graphics card’s capabilities, you’ll be better off with the RTX 2070 Super. It’s $100 less than the Founders Edition and only $60 more than the regular RTX 2070. The regular RTX 2070 Super also comes with a 10-year warranty.
The RTX 2070 Super is more power efficient than the RTX 2070
Let’s start with the price. The RTX 2070 Super costs $650, whereas the RTX 2070 costs $550. In the chart below, you can see just how much difference the extra $100 will make. The RTX 2070 Super has the same clock speed as the RTX 2070, but it takes less power to do so. So for just $30 more, the RTX 2070 Super saves you 1.5 watts of power. That’s the equivalent of shaving an extra 1 percent off of your power bill each year. And it makes a big difference. Running a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti at 60-70 percent of the card’s clock speed will use around 35 watts. That’s a lot of power. The RTX 2070 Super is faster than the RTX 2070 Nvidia doesn’t tout any figures for clock speed.
Future performance of these GPU’s
The most exciting aspect of the rtx 2070 vs rtx 2070 super is that you can power your GPU with the very best graphics card available right now. It’s also more future-proof than the RTX 2070 since, at the time of writing, the RTX 2070 is Nvidia’s most powerful graphics card on the market. It can power a VR headset, but not every VR headset that you can find in 2018 is built to the same spec as the RTX 2070 Super. The RTX 2070 Super has a higher TDP and the power phases are smaller, which should keep it running cooler and run better in general. Secondly, the RTX 2070 Super supports better VR software You need a graphics card with better graphics performance than the one you bought last year to support new VR headsets.
The RTX 2070 Super is better for VR than the RTX 2070
Most GeForce graphics cards are good enough for 1080p gaming. And while the RTX 2070 was a solid gaming card when Nvidia released it, the graphics card had some glaring weaknesses that stopped it from being a truly great gaming graphics card. The RTX 2070 Super addresses that. First, there’s the price. Nvidia’s RTX 2070 Super is still a bit more expensive than the regular RTX 2070 ($499), but the extra $100 (or so) is much more palatable than the $600 or so you’d pay for the RTX 2070 Founders Edition (the card you’d usually get from Nvidia when you buy it as a pre-order).
Conclusion
The thing is that you can’t get the RTX 2070 with a 120Hz monitor. You can get it with a 144Hz monitor, but then you’re stuck with whatever settings your screen’s monitor supports. So if you want a monitor that supports the 1440p 144Hz refresh rate for the best graphics possible, you’re kind of on your own there. The only alternative is to get a monitor that supports the 1440p 240Hz refresh rate, and while I was looking at a few 24-inch 144Hz 144Hz displays to put in my shopping cart, I came across an argument that I thought was worth debating, so I put together a guide to buying a 1440p 144Hz monitor for RTX 2070 and GTX 2080 graphics cards. Regardless of whether you buy a monitor or not, I think it’s a great idea to get a PC that can run a 1440p 144Hz monitor.
